Picking a name for your child is never an easy task, I mean, they are stuck with it for life—and so are you. Here are some of the top baby names to consider adding to your list and where their inspiration comes from.

Movies and TV

You can always count on pop culture to inspire baby names. Movies, TV shows and celebrities that have garnered a cult following have always inspired parents to name their children after their favourite characters. Expect names like Billie, after Billie Eilish and Reese (what expectant mom hasn’t watched Big Little Lies?) to be some of the most popular monikers on the playground. Rey and Kylo (ever heard of Star Wars?) are also on the rise, while Kira (Star Treck) gets a spot on the list too. You can also make your little girl’s dreams come true by giving her the name that’s on all her contemporaries lips, the undeniable Queen Elsa.

Androgynous names

Gender-neutral baby names are an ever-growing category, especially since a number of parents choose not to know the gender of their baby before birth.  So, if you’ve skipped the gender-reveal party, you can still brainstorm names like Charlie, Riley, Parker and Quinn for your little bundle, boy or girl. Sam, Alex and Cameron are also favourites.

Classic names

Vintage or classic baby names have been steadily climbing the popularity list over the years, with names like Adeline, Amelia, Emmett, Arthur, Evelyn and Stella taking top ranks. Some of these names may feel old school, but don’t be surprised if you start hearing them on the playground. Biblical influences will also have names like Adah coming to nurseries near you.

Cities

Names inspired by places continue to be favourites among boy and girl names. Think Brooklyn, Austin, and of course, Chicago, which the Kardashian-Wests have now made famous.

Diversity

As the cultural mosaic of our country continues to change and become increasingly diverse, we’ll be seeing more exotic names take center stage. Muhammad and Amina are already on the rise, as are Diego and Luca.
